Week 6 Reflection
College Football is truly a gift that keeps on giving and this week it gave us plenty of excitement and energy. 4 of the top 11 ranked teams lost to unranked teams on Saturday. The big one in particular has to be #1 Alabama being upset by Vanderbilt, 40-35. Arkansas upset #4 Tennessee 19-14, Minnesota upset #11 USC 24-17, and #9 ranked 4-0 Mizzou got toasted by #25 ranked 4-1 Texas A&M. This, however, isn’t even the craziest news from this past weekend.
College Football has been nothing but a nonstop shifting of power over the past couple of weeks. A week ago #4 Alabama had a miraculous performance over #2 Georgia and coming into this week they were ranked #1. Jalen Milroe’s Heisman odds were sky high and Alabama was dubbed the best team in the nation. Now this week Alabama is humiliated, Jalen Milroe’s Heisman campaign has been halted, and there are many questions surrounding how they will come back from this loss. What’s even more insane is that the Army and Navy are undefeated and haven’t appeared to struggle much at all.
Despite the many upsets in College Football this week I think it’s important to talk about the legitimacy of some of these teams. For starters we have Miami. How they are still undefeated I have no idea. Last week they should have lost to Virginia Tech but they didn’t. So what? Well Cal is beating them. Looks like their undefeated season is over. Oh! Exactly the opposite. Cam Ward and the Hurricanes did it again on Saturday night with a truly incredible comeback. A team that I thought was for sure dead in the water, is now still incredibly undefeated. I don’t understand how or why, and I still don’t believe in Miami, but we can’t argue that their undefeated run has been nothing short of incredible. I don’t give Miami the legitimate stamp yet, I think if they beat Louisville we can say they are but they do have a pretty easy schedule.
The next team I think we should look at is Ohio State, a team that I personally think is the best team in the country. I know that two weeks ago I said it was Texas, and yes I still believe it is a tossup between those teams, however, I think Ohio State just clears Texas. True Freshman, Jeremiah Smith, has been nothing short of dominant. He and Ryan Williams of Alabama, are easily the two best receivers in the country. Will Howard has been a great QB and it helps to have so many good options to throw to. I did mention Jeremiah Smith, but senior WR Emeka Ebuekua is another insanely good option. Ohio State also has one of the best backfields in the country, in my opinion, with Quinshon Judkins and Trevion Henderson.
The final team I believe I should mention is the Oregon Ducks. The Ducks played the Michigan State Spartans on Friday night, and easily won that game. Despite his two interceptions, Dillon Gabriel looked very good. He threw for 257 passing yards, and 2 touchdowns. The Ducks are now ranked #3 in the new AP poll published today. This coming week they play Ohio State. Do I believe in the Ducks? I would certainly like to. On paper, they look great, and they have certainly played better since their week 3 battle against Boise State. However, I don’t think they are good enough to beat Ohio State. I’m sure the Autzen atmosphere will help, but I don’t think it will be enough.
